Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what level is appropriate for my child(ren)?

First, please review the descriptions found HERE to determine which class may be appropriate for your child.
NOTE: We teach to each individual child, not a formatted lesson plan. As a result, class levels are generally combined and there is a blending of levels. Children may be working on different skills within a class. This often allows siblings to potentially remain in the same swim class.

If, after reviewing class descriptions, you still have questions about your child’s appropriate swimming level, please contact us directly.

What happens if my child is sick or misses a class?

Do not bring your child to lessons if they are sick or if you or your child have been around anyone who has tested positive for Covid 19. We are unable to offer credits or make up lessons at this time.

What should we bring to our child’s first class?

A swimsuit, towel, a swim diaper for any child not COMPLETELY potty trained, and goggles. We do have goggles and nose clips for borrowing.

Do you offer private lessons or group lessons?

Our instructors offer mostly group and semi-private lessons. Despite what a lot of parents might think, most children do best in our small group lessons then in private lessons. Private lessons are offered on an as needed basis.

What is the difference between private and semi-private lessons?

Private lessons are 1:1 student/teacher ratio.
Semi-private lessons are 2:1 student/teacher ratio.

How large are your classes/what is your student/instructor ratio?

Private lessons are 1:1 student/teacher ratio.
Semi-private lessons are 2:1 student/teacher ratio.
Group lessons have a maximum of 4:1 student/teacher ratio for levels 1-4 and 5:1 student/teacher ratio for levels 5 and beyond.

Are parents allowed to watch the lesson?

Our regular policy in regards to parents staying on deck/watching: It is perfectly fine for parents to stay in the pool area to watch. We think the parents should see what their children are working on and know what their skill level is; however, IF the child is really clingy, crying a lot, or has an especially hard time separating from the parent, it is almost always better if the parent has to "go to the bathroom" and then disappears from the child's sight. When that is necessary, the child often does cry. Our instructors are trained to tell the child that mommy or daddy will be back in just a little bit and then they try to distract, distract, distract!  The instructor will ask the child about their favorite colors, what they had for breakfast, if they have any pets, etc..... while walking around the pool holding the child. If the child is not beginning to calm down- they don't have to be perfectly happy, but we should see the crying lessen and their body muscles begin to relax- then we will find a way to signal the parent to return. We will give the child their treat (generally a lollipop), tell them that we are glad they came and that we look forward to seeing them again the following week. If we do ask the parent to leave- generally with a look and nod of the head, we ask that you stay nearby, but  out of the child's sight. The instructor will nonchalantly watch to see what direction you go, in the case they need you to return early. If the child does begin to calm down, we will keep them in the lesson for the length of the lesson unless we feel they begin to decline. The objective of the first lesson or two with a very nervous child is really about building a relationship of trust between the child and instructor.

NOTE* It isn't uncommon for us to have to pry a child from their parents the first few lessons. It is imperative that the parent is upbeat, nonchalant, and reassuring all at the same time as they help to pass the child off. Typically, after 2-3 lessons the problem resolves, but having said that, some children can be tricky and unpredictable!

Are your instructors CPR and Red Cross certified, etc?

All lead instructors are trained by Swim Beyond LLC, are certified in Lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid and have a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience. Many of our instructors have additional coaching and teaching certifications.

Can my children (different ages and capabilities) be in the same class?

If your children work well together and are not more than 3 levels apart, we should be able to accommodate them within the same class. We often offer several different levels at the same time or back-to-back so that families with multiple children can more easily find lessons to fit their schedule.

Do you offer any discounts or scholarships?

Multiple student discounts for children in the same family are calculated upon checkout.
Financial scholarships are available. For more details, please click HERE.

Other discount codes are sometimes available. If you do not qualify under the guidelines of the Scholarship Application, but need some financial assistance, contact Coach Mandi.

Do you have a swim diaper policy?

Anyone not COMPLETELY potty trained must wear a plastic liner and a swim diaper. An accidental fecal release into the pool requires the pool to be shut down immediately and can cause pools to lose money and patrons to be without a pool for a day or two.

Is there a locker room or changing room onsite?

There are locker rooms/ changing facilities at all locations.

Can I request a specific instructor for my child?

We will try to honor specific requests for instructors, but it will depend on instructor availability and your scheduling flexibility.
